How Can We Dominate Search Results?

This is a question that I hear often. Business owners will tell me that they invested money in having a website created, but have little to show for it. If they’re lucky, they may get one lead a year from their website. If you search online for the product or service they offer, they’re nowhere to be found in the search results. They may want to dominate the search results, but their first problem is appearing in the search results. It’s no wonder small businesses are frustrated with their Internet presence (or lack thereof).

How can a business dominate search results?

Here are three steps to get you started on dominating search results:

  1. The first step to dominating search results is deciding which searches are important to you. Many business owners make the mistake of trying to appeal to a broad range of searches. If you’re an insurance broker, for example, do you really care whether you appear when someone searches “auto insurance rates”? Perhaps a better search for you to target would be “compare auto insurance rates on Long Island”. The latter will be easier to target, and more likely to yield a prospect who’s ready to buy from you.
  2. The second step to dominating search results is creating Internet assets that support the searches you’ve decided to target. What’s an Internet asset? Internet assets include domain names, website pages, social media pages, Twitter accounts, YouTube pages, etc. Internet assets are all of the things that you can buy or create online that speak to the searches you’ve decided to target. Keeping with the example above, I could conceivably purchase the domain name “compare-auto-insurance-rates-on-long-island.com” (which is available as I write this!) and develop a website at that address. That website could dominate the search results for my targeted search phrase because the search engines consider domain names and website page names when delivering the search results.
  3. The third step to dominating search results is publishing fresh, unique content that is of value to the people searching for what you offer. I’ll use the word “relevant” again which I’ve said many times before. Publish content on a regular, consistent basis that is relevant to your audience. In my case, I try to publish content monthly. It’s important to create content that is search engine optimized [help me create search engine optimized content] and free of spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and typos.

I do not guarantee that following this system will work for everyone all the time, however I can promise that if you follow a logical approach to creating your own unique Internet presence, you will outperform all of those competitors of yours who do not. Remember, you don’t have to outrun the grisly bear that’s chasing you; you only have to outrun the other guy!
